Q.

What can I do to lose weight?

A.

Eat less fast foods, fried food, candy, cookies, desserts, cheese, burgers and ice cream. Eat whole grains and fresh vegetables. Walk or do another exercise you like for one-half hour (or more) each day. The best diet/exercise programmes work over a long period of time. Crash diets do not work.

Q.

My young son is overweight and his father teases him. What can I do to help my son?

A.

Tell his father that teasing only makes the boy feel worse. This may cause him to eat more. Praise him for the good things he does and do not focus on his weight. Do not have junk food such as chips and sweets in the house. Ask everyone to eat only at the table. Chewing food well and eating slowly helps, too. Your son also needs to get a lot of exercise.

Q.

What’s good about low-fat diets?

A.

Fats have more concentrated calories than carbohydrates (bread, pasta) and protein (meat or beans). Fats that you eat easily turn into body fat. Packaged meats, desserts, chips, snacks and ice cream are all high in fat. Fruits, vegetables and grains are all low in fat. To reduce weight, reduce calories. To reduce calories, reduce fat.

Q.

Do fat-free treats really help keep weight down?

A.

If you can eat them in small amounts, these fat-free desserts are fine for a treat. But some people eat a whole box at one time. These foods have a lot of sugar. The body stores extra sugar as fat. Whole foods such as fresh vegetables, fruits and grains are naturally low in fat. They also will fill you up.
